Hanson Budget FAQ: Does the Town have control over the school assessment?

Hanson residents will vote on the Fiscal Year 2026 budget at the Annual and Special Town Meeting on May 5. The warrant includes a proposed override article. This is a frequently asked question.

QUESTION: Does the Town have control over the school assessment?

ANSWER: The Hanson Select Board does not set the budget for the Whitman Hanson Regional School District (WHRSD). That is done by the separately elected Whitman Hanson Regional School Committee (WHRSC). The Select Board’s role is to propose a funding source to voters for whatever assessment we receive.

If the override does not pass in Hanson, the WHRSD budget is considered rejected. If the WHRSD budget is rejected, the WHRSC has 30 days to reconsider their assessments to each town. The WHRSC may vote to keep the assessments the same or they may vote to decrease the assessments. In either event, a Special Town Meeting will need to be held within 45 days of the reassessment.
